Black History Month: It's changing times for local African-American theaters In New York

The Bronx’s Mind-builders Creative Arts Center is another group with a youth-orientated theater program, formed in 1984 as the Positive Youth Troupe. The ensemble, now known as the PYT Conservatory of the Dramatic Arts, was designed to be a voice for young people, and a powerful tool to promote positive change and relationships within their communities — the same role played by black theater decades earlier, but with younger participants.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Ballard became involved with Mind-Builders, a Bronx community center dedicated to the empowerment of youth, when he was 16 years-old.
