Community Folk

Culture Internships

The Dr. Beverly Robinson Community Folk Culture Program at Mind-Builders trains young people ages 13 to 18 to identify, document, and present the traditions and folk artists “discovered” in their families, community, the borough, and city.

Community Folk Culture:

Following completion of the required application /assignment and interview, this paid internship program provides workshop training in interview skills, video/audio/photographic documentation and production of free presentations that share the exciting artists and culture that exists in the community.

Folk culture interns have featured Black cowboys, hip-hop artists, Yoruba priests, gospel singers, and woodcarvers, as well as traditional musicians, dancers, hat-makers, and popular cooks of local dishes, among many other talents.

Trips, research, appearances on cable TV or on radio, fieldwork, the writing of newspaper articles and audience literature are some of the varied components of the program.

Successful collaboration with Bronx Museum of the Arts and Community Works bring the knowledge gained to school groups and to the general public both in the Bronx and throughout the city.

This intergenerational program is noted as one of the
nationwide models in the field, building an understanding
and appreciation of the predominantly African, African
American, Latino and Caribbean cultures of the
student body.
